The most regular tense in Spanish
The imperfect (pretérito imperfecto) has two sets of endings and only three irregular verbs in the whole language. If the preterite felt like a minefield, this is the reward.
| -ar: hablar | -er: comer | -ir: vivir | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablaba | comía | vivía |
| tú | hablabas | comías | vivías |
| él / ella / usted | hablaba | comía | vivía |
| nosotros | hablábamos | comíamos | vivíamos |
| vosotros | hablabais | comíais | vivíais |
| ellos / ustedes | hablaban | comían | vivían |
Two details: the yo and él forms are identical (yo hablaba, ella hablaba), so context or a subject pronoun tells them apart; and the nosotros form always carries an accent: hablábamos, comíamos, vivíamos.
The three irregulars
| yo | tú | él | nosotros | vosotros | ellos | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ser | era | eras | era | éramos | erais | eran |
| ir | iba | ibas | iba | íbamos | ibais | iban |
| ver | veía | veías | veía | veíamos | veíais | veían |
Stem-changing verbs do not change in the imperfect: dormía (not durmía), quería, pedía, jugaba. The imperfect of hay is había, for singular and plural alike.
What it means
The imperfect describes the past without marking a beginning or an end: habits (de niño jugaba en la calle), background and description (llovía, eran las ocho, tenía diez años), states (quería ser astronauta) and actions in progress when something else happened (dormía cuando sonó el teléfono). English often translates it with “used to”, “would” or “was …-ing”. For when to choose it over the preterite, see the trigger words guide.
Quick answers
How do you conjugate the imperfect tense in Spanish?
-ar verbs take -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -abais, -aban (hablaba). -er and -ir verbs take -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían (comía, vivía). Only ser, ir and ver are irregular.
What are the irregular verbs in the Spanish imperfect?
Just three: ser (era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran), ir (iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban) and ver (veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían).
Is it había or habían?
Había, for singular and plural: había un problema, había muchos problemas. Habían is only correct as an auxiliary: habían llegado.
Do stem-changing verbs change in the imperfect?
No. Verbs like dormir, querer, pedir and jugar are completely regular in the imperfect: dormía, quería, pedía, jugaba.
Why does hablábamos have an accent?
The nosotros form of every verb in the imperfect carries a written accent: hablábamos, comíamos, vivíamos, éramos, íbamos. The stress falls on the third-to-last syllable, so the accent is required.
